Description: About the Book The Trojan women – is a tragedy by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides, staged in 415 BC along with the tragedies "Alexander" and "Palamed". This is the only surviving part of Euripides' trilogy on the Trojan War. The tragedy takes place immediately after the fall of Troy. Captured by Hecuba, her daughter Cassandra and daughter-in-law Andromache learn that they are distributed among the leaders of the Achaeans - Odysseus, Agamemnon and Neoptolem, respectively. Andromache is robbed of her son Astyanax, who is thrown from the city wall. Cassandra predicts misfortune to the Achaeans on the way back and upon returning home. Elena appears later. She tries to justify herself to Menelaus, claiming that she ended up in Troy because the city was destined to die, and because of the dispute of the goddesses. But Hecuba refutes all her arguments, and Menelaus decides to give the unfaithful wife to the inhabitants of Argos so that they stone her. In the finale, the walls of Troy collapse due to a fire, and the captives go to the ships. The tragedy shows the senselessness of war, which brings only misfortunes - not only to the vanquished, but also to the victors. This translation with explanations by Gilbert Murray, English classical philologist, writer, translator, publicist, public intellectual, Regius Professor of Greek in the University of Oxford, was published in 1915.
