Description: USS LIBERTY AGTR-5 Memorial naval cover pictorially postmarked from Lincoln, NE dated Feb 28, 2021. Blue color photo of actual spy ship on cachet #2554 by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964. Cover prepared on an un-gummed envelope. The USS Liberty was built for the US Maritime Commission in Portland, OR in 1945 and was originally named SS Simmons Victory. The vessel was acquired by the Navy in 1963 and converted into an secret intelligence gathering vessel and commissioned on 1 April 1964. The vessel was attacked and badly damaged by Israeli forces on 8 June 1967 in the Mediterranean during the Six Day War between Israel and Egypt, Syria and Jordan. The vessel was gathering intelligence and had 34 killed and 171 wounded. The vessel was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and the commander was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism. The 1967 USS Liberty incident happened during the middle of the Vietnam War and the Johnson Administration did not want to fight with Israel, normally allied to America. Cover franked with a 55 cent flag stamp. Also see covers for USS Belmont, USS Sgt. Joseph E. Muller, USS Banner, USS Georgetown, USS Jamestown, USS Oxford, USS Halibut, USNS Glomar Explorer, USS Palm Beach, USNS James E. Robinson and USNS Sgt. Jose F. Valdez. Check out my other items!
