His work was strongly influenced by the Shijo School, one of the more popular styles of Japanese painting known for its soft, impressionistic approach to subject matter and its extensive use of atmospheric washes, Seitei was best known for his kacho, or bird and flower paintings, though he also worked in other genres. He is said to have been a major influence on Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908) and his pupil Kaburagi Kiyokata (1878-1973), who taught both Ito Shinsui and Torii Kotondo.
