Description: This image features New Mexico pioneer James McCallister as a young man. While McCallister himself is a historical figure, perhaps more important is who else is in this image? McCallister was in New Mexico during the 1880s, so are these other men outlaws? So this photo has a little risk and a lot of reward potential for the historian of the Wild West! From his obituary in 1998: J.M. McCallister, a pioneer New Mexico cattleman--believed to be Albuquerque's oldest living resident--died in a local hospital today at the age of 106. McCallister is said to have shipped more cattle over the Santa Fe Railway than any other man in New Mexico. He died of a kidney infection, He had entered the hospital Jan 21. Active until the time he entered the hospital, Mr. McCallister was feted by relatives and close friends at his 106th birthday party here Jan 9. The retired rancher and ex-cowpoke had been a New Mexico resident more than 80 years, living most of the time in the Springer area. For the past 10 years he had been spending his winters in Albuquerque. Slight of stature, with a keen sense of humor and a zest for living, the pioneer enjoyed dancing almost up to his 100th birthday. In more recent years he spent much of his time playing cards and reminiscing about the old days. Born in 1862 in Coryell County, Texas, he came to New Mexico in 1886 and worked as a cowpuncher in Colfax County for five years before homesteading on a ranch near Colmor. He later bought the Arrowhead Ranch in the Sweetwater Valley near Springer, and from an original homestead developed a 22,000 acre ranch. He sold his ranching interests some years ago, but retained properly in Springer, where he spent his summers. McCallister spent many years on horseback, recalling once that he was thrown only twice during his bronc-busting day. He was a firm believer in hard work and the outdoor life, often crediting these factors for his own long life. When he observed his 100th birthday here in 1962, he received a congratulatory telegram from President John F. Kennedy. McCallsiter was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
