Description: Prototype Textile Machine, 1893 World's Columbian Exposition (ca. 1893). An impressive prototype for a textile winder, coiler, or braider.Exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Constructed of chromed hardened steel and housed in a glass case with oak base. Provenance: from the collection of textile expert Susan A. Hatch (1856-1954). Hatch was appointed judge of textiles at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and the following year became a buyer for Aitken, Son, and Co. in New York. She was employed as foreign and domestic buyer of neckwear, handkerchiefs and artificial flowers for engineer Saks and Co, later Saks Fifth Avenue, in 1901 and remained with firm until her retirement in 1928. All parts move. Made from chromed, hardened steel. The hub of the wire spool is painted wood. It is anchored inside the oak case, as is the 19th century brass alcohol burner. Overall approximately 15 1/2 x 14 x 22 inches. I apologize the photos aren't better but hesitate to dismantled the glass case.
