The design features a Bison silhouette with the Great Seal of the State of Wyoming emblazon thereon, against a field of blue with white and red borders. The blue background color of the flag represents the sky and the distant mountains. Blue also symbolizes fidelity and justice, while red is for the native Americans and the blood that was shed by the early pioneers to settle the land. White symbolizes purity and uprightness. The bison silhouette serves as a reminder that the animal once dominated the great plains of the state and the state seal appearing on the bison represents the custom of branding livestock by the people of Wyoming. In 1916, Wyoming was one of only a few states that did not have a state flag. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) decided to hold a contest for members of the public to submit design ideas for a Wyoming flag with $20 being offered as a prize for the winner. The contest received 37 entries and Verna Keays, who was a recent graduate of the Chicago Art Institute was chosen as the winner. In Keays original design, the bison was positioned facing toward the fly end to represent the freedom the animal once had to roam the plains, but later the bison was reversed to face the hoist, as it made the design more balanced and typically animals depicted on flags do face the hoist as they would face the wind. Although this change was never officially adopted by the legislature, all Wyoming flags from the first batch onward were produced with the bison facing the hoist. Nylon is a durable, lightweight material that will easily fly in a light breeze and features bright, rich colors. The artwork is visible on both sides of the flag and the lettering reads correctly from one side only.
