Description: Yaka Biteki Female Divination Figure Democratic Republic of the Congo Early / Mid 20th century. Collected by naturalist and philanthropist, Eli Weiss in the 1980’s. 11” tall x 3” wide x 3.5” deep Very Good condition. Right foot removed for customary deconsecration. Yaka Biteki figures possess special properties when activated by a diviner. Beautifully carved with an upturned nose and downcast eyes, give the figure a solemn and introspective expression, suggesting preparation for a spiritual journey with contemplation. The Yaka, numbering around 300,000 and located along the Kwango River in the southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo, are recognized for their highly developed artistic sense as reflected in this exceptional figure.
